Before submission, you must have a copyright clearance key . Please ensure your submission meets the requirements described here and is of high quality. Like all of Project Gutenberg, including you, the WWers are volunteers. Contemporary Project Gutenberg HTML files end in ".htm" and either ".htm" or ".html" is an acceptable filename extension for a submission. The text filename should end in ".txt". Upload a single .zip that includes your text file, HTML file and any images (in an /images folder). We attempt to rename your files to be Unix-compatible if needed, and it’s best to not use these characters in your filenames: space, ~`!@#$%^&*(){}[]\/|?"’ . It is safe to use periods, commas, hyphens, underscores, letters and numbers. File names shouldn’t be more than around 12 characters long, are case-sensitive, and all files (including folders and linked images) should only utilize lower-case. Required formats and checks Nearly every eBook should be submitted in two formats: HTML and plain text. For the text file, UTF-8 is required. If you are not planning on submitting these two formats (and only these two), make sure you discuss it with the whitewashers first. Legacy text formats (Latin1 and others) should be converted to UTF-8 before submission. Confirm conversions to EPUB and MOBI and any other derived formats occur without errors. Submitters must use the online ebookmaker to confirm automatic conversion from HTML to the eReader formats is yielding reasonable results. Run this tool repeatedly as needed. This is also an opportunity to review HTML validator and transformation output from ebookmaker In particular, ebookmaker generates a file named output.txt . You will be required to provide a link to your project’s output.txt file during upload. If any errors (other than warnings) are reported in output.txt , you will need to write an explanation on the upload form. Recommended Additional Checks Spelling, formatting, quotation mark matching, and scanno checks. There are a variety of tools for this. We recommend checking text files using www.pgdp.net/ppwb/pptext.php . We recommend checking HTML files using using www.pgdp.net/ppwb/pphtml.php . Valid HTML. Use the W3C validator at validator.w3.org to ensure your HTML is valid and well-formed. Valid CSS. Use the W3C validator at jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ to check and fix CSS validity. Any CSS should be within the HTML file itself, not an external file. Be sure that your submission displays correctly even if CSS directives are ignored, because some of our readers might be using plain text readers, screen readers/Braille, or older versions of software. HTML tidy (a command-line application ). This finds syntax issues that the validator misses. Don’t have it fix your HTML unless you want it to. Try: tidy -q -errors -utf8 filename.htm . Additional guidance The preferred format for uploaded HTML is HTML5. HTML4, typically with XHMTL serialization, is also accepted. Guidance is available here: Post-processing_HTML5 CSS3 that has reached "REC" (Recommendation) status at www.w3.org/Style/CSS/#specs is allowed. Individual CSS3 elements that have not reached "REC" status may be approved, such as display:flex. Note: PG-RST (ReStructured Text) is now discontinued as an upload format. Instead, HTML+text should be used for nearly all productions. For math-heavy projects that would formerly have been done in LaTeX or TEI, HTML+SVG images are now preferred.
